Lexus vows bolder design, won’t "always stay in the middle of mainstream"
Filed under: Lexus , Toyota , Design/Style Lexus design has never been very flashy, and many might say (including us) the automaker’s entire current lineup is a bit bland-looking ( LFA supercar excepted, natch). But that visual conservatism may be about to change: Automotive News is reporting that the Japanese juggernaut plans to change that by taking more risks and striving for more character. Toyota Design Chief Tokuo Fukuichi tells AN that the brand will build on the design language first introduced in the HS 250h and refined in the GS , but with more emphasis on the fighter jet-inspired grille. Toyota Tacoma to receive nip/tuck this fall
Filed under: Truck , Toyota Toyota is reportedly working on a refresh for its Tacoma mid-size pickup, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal . The refreshed Taco will debut in October, as part of the automaker’s plan to debut many all-new or refreshed vehicles this year. Chrysler repays last of TARP loans six years ahead of schedule
Filed under: Government/Legal , Chrysler , Earnings/Financials , Fiat Chrysler has taken the final step towards freedom from Uncle Sam by paying off the rest of its government loans. USA Today reports that Chrysler and Fiat paid the Treasury Department $500 million for 98,461 shares and $60 million for shares from a pact with the United Auto Workers’ VEBA retirement trust. The payment means that Chrysler shed its government obligations a full six years ahead of schedule. Continue reading

Three-cylinder, 1.0-Liter Engine To Be Ford’s Smallest EcoBoost Yet
Thanks to a significant effort from Ford’s powertrain engineers, the automaker is putting a whole new spin on the old saying that “good thing’s come in three’s.” That’s because Ford is preparing to launch its first three-cylinder, 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, which will offer good things like improved fuel efficiency , decreased emissions and increased power to small-car customers around the globe—including those in the U.S. “Consumers are telling us that they want to buy affordable vehicles that get many more miles per gallon,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development. Chrysler employees at the Jefferson North Plant in Detroit were busted for drinking beer during their lunch breaks , and the automaker subsequently fired 13 of the workers involved . Now, the same behavior has been observed at Chrysler’s Trenton Engine Plant. Continue reading

Scion taking a cue from BMW, considering becoming a mobility provider?
Filed under: Scion , Toyota Scion’s youth focus has served it well in the last nine years, with nearly 80 percent of first-time buyers moving into a Toyota or another Scion when the time comes to trade in. But Toyota is keenly aware that the youth market is retracting, and thus, Scion could be used as an incubator for a new transportation initiative within the automaker. What form it takes is open to speculation, but everything from unconventional body styles to car-sharing programs could be on the table. Continue reading
